Protecting the detector

One of the sodium-iodide (NaI) detectors operated by the UKDMC in the Boulby mine. The NaI crystal is encased in a cooling cryostat and viewed by two photomultipliers through quartz light guides. The detector is surrounded by high-purity lead and copper to shield it from radioisotopes in the walls of the cavern.
