Underground physics

The UKDMC operates its experiments in the Boulby salt mine in North Yorkshire. The experiment is located 1100 metres underground to protect the detectors from neutrons generated by cosmic-ray muons that can mimic the effects of the WIMPs that the collaboration is searching for. The detection of such dark-matter particles would have enormous significance for both particle physics and cosmology. The mine is operated by Cleveland Potash Ltd.
