3 The magnetic remains of a giant wooden henge

(a) A high-sensitivity caesium-vapour magnetometer was used to produce a magnetic survey within the stone circle at Stanton Drew in the UK. (b) The survey revealed a series of nine concentric circles of discrete positive anomalies. Each anomaly is believed to be the remains of an individual timber post setting. From the geophysical evidence, the site is interpreted as a giant neolithic ritual monument, similar to the reconstruction shown in (c).
