Lorentz figures

In 1904 the Dutch physicist Hendrik Antoon Lorentz (top left) formulated a set of equations that maintain the invariance of the laws of physics in relativity. For the past 15 years Alan Kostelecky of Indiana University has been exploring the theoretical and phenomenological implications of Lorentz violation. His work and that of others has enabled groups like that of Ronald Walsworth (far left in bottom picture) at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics to put Lorentz symmetry to the test in high-precision atomic experiments.
