Gamma-ray bursts in the light


The left-hand picture of the gamma-ray burst detected on 28 February 1997 was taken by Jan van Paradijs and colleagues 21 hours after the burst, and clearly shows a bright optical transient. The right-hand one, taken eight days later, shows that the optical signal has become much fainter, while the signal from the star next to it has not changed.
