Observations of gamma-ray bursts

This sky map shows the 1942 gamma-ray bursts detected by the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) instrument over a five-year period. The centre of our galaxy is in the middle of the figure, while the Milky Way band runs from centre left to centre right. No concentration of bursts towards either of these regions can be discerned, and there is no other recognizable pattern.
