(a) The sea-surface temperature anomalies in the Pacific in December 1996 that were used to initiate a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model at the ECMWF. (b) The predicted SST distribution for May 1997 is based on an ensemble average of six-month forecasts starting at different days in December 1996 and is in good agreement with what was observed (c).
