4. Making artificial skin
Brian Derby from Manchester University in the UK has shown that live animal cells can be passed through an ink-jet printer. This amazing discovery opens the possibility of building materials consisting of live skin cells within "scaffolds" of bio-compatible fibres. Nutrients are jetted onto the structure to allow the cells to multiply. Dissolving the scaffold fibres leaves a patch of real "skin" that can be applied to burns or ulcers.
